EDS 103- Mathematics for Economists I

 Set Theory, Factors and Exponents. Inequalities Logarithms and Exponential Functions, Matrix Algebra. Equations, Functions and Progressions.

 

EDS 104-Mathematics for Economists II

Implicit Functions and Economic Application. Differentiation. Introduction to calculus.

Trigonometric Functions (Co-ordinate Geometry) Permutations and Combinations.

 

EDS 105- Introduction to Development.

Concept and Definitions of Development. Theories of development.

Aid and Development. The Economics of Development. Globalization and Development.

 

EDS 106- Institutions and development

Exploration of the role of institutions in human development. The course is devised using a wide canvas with the intention of exploring the manner in which institutions have been conceptualized and analyzed across individual disciplines in the social sciences. Theoretical perspectives alongside both historical and current evidence on the interrelations between institutional structures and social and economic actions. Institutional analysis drawing on concepts and frameworks provided by the disciplines of economics, sociology, political science, law and anthropology. An examination of the institutions of the state, notably the role of the bureaucracy and judiciary; societal institutions such as NGOs and social groups, customary norms such as culture and caste that affect human development. Exploration of institutions such as the market, firm and the state etc.

 

EDS 107- Development Economics.

Industrialization and Trade Strategies. Theories and Practice of Industrial Financial reforms in Developing Countries. Issues of Employment and Income distribution. Population Policy. The Development Experiences of Different Regions.

 

EDS 108- Sociology and politics of development

Classical as well as alternative theories of development. Challenges these theories have faced from different quarters such as the post-development, anti globalization and social movements approaches. The role of the post-colonial state in development, the contribution of international development organizations to shaping the discourse on development, feminist attempts to influence the development process, multinational corporations and corporate social responsibility, civil society and NGOs, political Islam and development, competing policy approaches to child labour, and the relationship between development and democracy.

 

FSS 101- Mathematics for Social Scientists I

Mathematical Concepts in Social sciences. Set Theory. Revision  of Elementary Algebra: equations and identities: equations in one or two variables; Simultaneous equation; quadratic equations; the remainders theorem’ partial fractions, Surds, indices and logarithms. Sequences and series: the arithmetic progression and geometrical progression. Summation of series. Convergence of series. Permutation, combination, the binomial theorem. Co-ordinate geometry of straight line. Intersection of straight lines plotting of curves, computation of distances and areas by co-ordinate. Basic Trigonometry.

 

FSS 102- Introductory Statistics for Social Sciences

The nature of statistical methods; frequency Distribution; Measures of Central tendency-  Mean, Median, Mode etc; Measures of Dispersion Range; Variance, Standard Deviation, Elementary Normal and Poisson Distribution. Time analysis, Regression Analysis, Index numbers. Analyses of variance sources of statistical data in Nigeria:

 

ACC 101- Introduction to Accounting 1

The nature, scope and purpose of accounting. Basic financial statements.. accounting conventions. Theory and mechanics of double-entry book-keeping. Book of original entry. The cash book and the ledger, classification, recording and summary of business transactions.

 

ACC 102- Introduction to Accounting II

The Revenue Accounts and Balance Sheets of Business Concerns The Valuation of Asset and Measurement of Business Income. The Interpretation of Accounts, significant Accounting Ratios Sources and Application of Funds Statements.
